Restriction Rules Guide

Build checkout restriction rules and clear shopper-facing messages in Cart Marshal.

Restriction rules block checkout when the cart, address, customer, or B2B context does not match your requirements. Order Restrictions and Address Restrictions are available on Core and up; Quantity Restrictions and Product Restrictions are available on Growth and up. The older Customer Requirements template is hidden from new-rule creation, but existing legacy rules remain supported.

Template examples

  • Order Restrictions for minimum or maximum order amount and item count.
  • Quantity Restrictions for product or variant minimums, maximums, and multiples such as case packs.
  • Product Restrictions with customer exceptions.
  • Address Restrictions, including PO Box, state/province, and ZIP/postal rules.
  • B2B and customer-tag targeting on supported restriction templates.

Currency handling

Enter Order Restriction amount limits in your store currency. At checkout, Cart Marshal uses Shopify's presentment currency rate to convert those configured amounts before comparing them with the cart subtotal. This keeps minimum and maximum amount checks consistent when a customer checks out in another currency. Quantity limits and percentage values are not currency-converted.

Exceptions

Supported restriction templates can include exceptions for signed-in customers, B2B / Company customers, and customers with specific tags. Customer segments are not currently available as restriction exceptions.

Address rules

Address Restrictions can block all addresses, PO Boxes, states/provinces, ZIP/postal prefixes, or require ZIP/postal prefixes. PO Box detection uses the keyword list in Settings.

Customer-specific requirements

For new rules, use Order Restrictions for minimum or maximum order amount and item-count requirements. Use Quantity Restrictions for per-product or per-variant quantity rules. Supported restriction templates can be scoped to B2B / Company customers or customers with specific tags.

Purchase-order-number requirements remain supported only for existing legacy Customer Requirements rules; new Order Restrictions do not validate purchase order numbers or formats. Shopify B2B setup is required only when a rule targets B2B / Company customers. See Shopify B2B documentation.

If you already have a legacy Customer Requirements rule, you can continue to open and manage it. For new configurations, choose the current restriction template that matches your order, quantity, product, or address requirement.

Message guidance

Use clear shopper-facing error messages. Avoid internal terms, rule names, or unexplained abbreviations.
